Jackson Health System and Jackson Health Foundation Breaks Ground on Jackson Memorial Hospital’s New Emergency Room
The $300 million renovation will transform the current 48,000 square foot emergency department to a state-of-the-art facility spanning 178,800 square feet, making it one of the largest in the nation.
MIAMI, FL, JANUARY 31, 2024 – On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Jackson Health System and Jackson Health Foundation, joined by dignitaries, philanthropists, and members of Jackson’s clinical care team, broke ground on Jackson Memorial Hospital’s new emergency room. The event highlighted Jackson’s remarkable progress over the past decade and unveiled key features that will distinguish the new emergency room as a state-of-the-art facility. Carlos Migoya, president and chief executive officer of Jackson Health System, Hamilton Clark, senior vice president and chief executive officer of Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Flavia Llizo, co-president and chief development officer of Jackson Health Foundation, discussed the expansion’s significance, its potential community impact, and the collaborative efforts that made it possible. The reimagined emergency room will be a role model facility in quality, efficiency, and experience. Key enhancements to improve the patient experience include more than 200 patient rooms, a fast-track triage to reduce wait times, 50 observation rooms, six resuscitation rooms, and enhanced privacy for loved ones to be near patient care areas with family lounges and waiting areas.
The existing emergency room will undergo renovations to match the aesthetic of the new facility, which upon completion, will stand as one of the largest emergency rooms in the nation. Notably, the new facility will have separate entrances on Northwest 19th Street for adults, and Northwest 18th Street for pediatric patients. The pediatric area, within the facility, will have 30 rooms, a child-friendly environment, and a dedicated lobby and registration area. The new facility is slated to be completed in 2025 and the existing emergency room’s transformation will be completed in 2027.
“While many projects are significant, this latest project tops my list because it has the potential to be the most transformative and most impactful,” said Migoya. “A hospital that provides the most exceptional care like Jackson Memorial does, deserves a facility that reflects that expertise. We can now officially say that the emergency room of the future is on the way!”
Special thanks were extended to Trish and Dan Bell, Carlos and Martaligia Lopez-Cantera, and Ceferino Machado for their generous contributions towards the adult emergency room expansion. The Batchelor Foundation, G City, and West Coast University also received acknowledgment for their generosity, as their contributions will help fund the pediatric emergency room expansion.
Flavia Llizo, emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “Jackson couldn’t do what it does without the support of the community.
